Old Skool is a classic from Vans with a street-style vibe, while Knu Skool is more in line with current trends and sells out quickly. Both shoes have their pros and cons and it’s a bit like comparing the Nike Dunk SB to regular Nike Dunks.

Today, I’ll be telling you everything about these two shoes so you can make informed decisions about them.

Vans Old Skool:  The Vans Old Skool are the classic, the OG, the all-time favorite low-top silhouette that first appeared back in 1977. This design, which was previously named Vans #36, is one of the most beloved designs of Vans shoes

The Old Skool has a slimmer design that looks very tasteful and trendy in every way. In my opinion, this design provides freedom of movement and a casual aesthetic, making it suitable for various activities beyond skateboarding, such as everyday wear or walking.

Here, the design incorporates a mix of suede leather and canvas for the upper part. Also, at the bottom, there’s a rubber waffle outsole.

Moreover, it’s design features a slimmer tongue, a thinner jazz stripe, and decently sized laces on the sneaker. We’ll talk about that soon.

All in all, it’s most likely a shoe that you can see in common.

Vans Knu Skool: The Vans Knu Skool has a slightly wider silhouette. It’s a low-top sneaker with a bit bulkier design. It first appeared in 1998 and after that, Knu Skool was reissued in late 2023. Compared to Old Skool, Knu Skool has a very distinctive vibe.

For Knu Skool, Vans have mostly used suede leather all over. For outsoles, it features the same rubber waffle outsole.

Moreover, it has a bigger tongue, a bigger jazz stripe and retro-styled chunky laces compared to Old Skool. Not just that, it features more padding around the collar and, of course, it’s a bit heavy compared to Old Skool.

For most people, it’s design looks goofy and is not very common at all.

Jazz Stripe

One of the most recognizable elements of the Vans shoe design is the iconic Vans side stripe. In these sneakers, there’s a big difference in the jazz stripe.

Vans Old Skool: Here the jazz stripes run on the side and are also pretty thin. It’s not 3D; it’s just a simple looking stripe made out of leather.

Vans Knu Skool: It has a wider 3D-jazz stripe, which can be clearly seen on the sides. The Jazz stripe on the Knu Skool version is protruding much more from the sneaker compared to the Old Skool. It’s both wider and more pronounced. Plus, it’s also made out of leather.

Tongue

Let’s count some differences in the tongues of both of these shoes.

Vans Old Skool: On Vans Old Skools, you get to see that the tongue is super-thin. It doesn’t come with a lot of padding and doesn’t cause any issues with the fitting. It’s neither thick nor wide.

For a slimmer silhouette, I really love how normal and decent this tongue is.

Vans Knu Skool: Vans Knu Skool has a big, chunky tongue. This tongue has a lot of padding and is very plush. The cushioning here goes deep, and this is what makes them best for skating. And it’s not just thick; it’s also pretty wide compared to the Old Skool.

Even though the tongue does look good, it’s also known to create issues when tightening up the laces. So, do mind that as well.

Laces

The most visible difference lies in the laces of the shoes. Let me tell you what actually changed in their laces.

Vans Old Skool: The laces are pretty normal, kind of like what you see in most sneakers.

Vans Knu Skool: The laces on the Knu Skool are super thick and honestly, they suit it very well as it’s a thicker silhouette. For most people, these laces are what create a distinctive vibe to these shoes.

Fit

Both stand true-to-size but there’s a short difference in the fit too; you’ve got to check that as well.

Vans Old Skool: The Vans Old Skool runs true-to-size for most wearers. But if you have wider feet, you have to go with a wider size or go a size up. Vans Old Skool have a slightly narrow toe area; sizing down could result in a narrow fit for the rest of your foot.

Vans Knu skool:  The Knu Skool, on the other hand, also runs true to size. It fits well for all, whether narrow feet or wide feet; its design cooperates with every wearer. So, stick with your own size when buying Knu Skool.

Comfort

There are a few differences in the comfort section as well. Let’s hit them.

Vans Old Skool: Vans Old Skool sneakers are some of the most comfortable sneakers on the market. With a sleek design that doesn’t add bulk, these shoes are super lightweight and supportive. You’ll definitely notice how easy it is to walk in these sneakers.

Furthermore, the construction is overall very thin but durable. I know it doesn’t feature a lot of padding but speaking of the on-foot experience, it doesn’t bother me much. I have said that the outsole is good and the fit is very secure. With that, the shoe is also breathable, which helps to prevent your feet from sweating.

However, I really need to mention that the insole is too damn thin, so they hurt sometimes whenever you wear them for a longer time. Also, the ankle protection isn’t quite up to par, so you have to be careful when skating.

Other than that, they are good and can take a lot of beating. I mean, one pair can last for a good amount of time. It doesn’t wear out easily and it gives you value for your money.

What I really like about them is their adaptability. Their adaptability ensures they seamlessly blend with any outfit. For me, this epitomizes true comfort—the ability to effortlessly slip them on without a second thought, knowing they’ll always look good.

Vans Knu Skool: Comfort-wise, the Knu Skool tends to be a better option compared to the old Skool. Here you get to see extra padding for your foot, especially for the ankle. Also, the soft lining makes you feel comfortable when you wear them without socks.

Furthermore, the toe box is much wider, so your feet won’t feel cramped or restricted at all. Also, the insole in here is a bit cushioned, which somehow improves comfort. The inside padding and tongue also absorb shocks better, making it more comfortable for doing skateboarding tricks. Also, the shoes come with a heel pull, which makes it easy to slip in and out.

All in all, the Vans Knu Skool is also a great pair of shoes for those looking for comfort and a timeless look. Its design is a bit heavy compared to Old Skool but it doesn’t feel very heavy on the feet.

Prices

Even though both shoes aren’t very expensive, I know a lot of you guys want me to uncover the prices of both of these shoes:

Vans Old Skool: The Vans Old Skool is a mid-range shoe and it costs mainly around 70 to 80 dollars, depending on the colorways you’re going with.

Vans Knu Skool: Vans Knu Skool, however, comes a bit more expensive compared to Old Skool and costs around 75 dollars in the black and white colorway. The price difference also applies when you’re looking at color options beyond just the black and white models.

FAQs

When Did the Knu Skool Vans Come Out?

The Vans Knu Skool was first released back in 1998, and then again, the shoe disappeared.

However, a few years ago, in 2015, Knu Skool made it’s second entry in Vans Japan with a bit of a modern look but the same old puffy design. The shoe became so popular that on November 4, 2023, Vans Shoes released it globally. Following then, the Knu Skool sneakers are regaining popularity in the US.

Are Knu Skool Shoes Retro?

Yes! The Vans Knu Skool shoes bring back the cool style of ’90s skateboarding shoes but with a modern twist for a newer generation. They have a puffy tongue and ankle collar like classic ’90s kicks, giving them a nostalgic feel with updated comfort.

Plus, they feature a 3D-molded sidestripe, a classic Vans look that’s still stylish today. And don’t forget the oversized, chunky laces that give them that bold ’90s vibe.

Overall, these shoes mix the best of the past with today’s trends, making them a must-have for anyone who loves retro style!

Are Vans Old Skool Vegan?

No, Vans’ famous Old Skool shoes often aren’t vegan because of the leather side stripe. It’s disappointing to hear that the vegan version of the Old Skool shoes isn’t available yet, whether it’s the low-top or high-top style.

So, if you’re looking for vegan shoes, the regular Old Skool might not be the best choice. Sadly, there’s still no option for those looking for a vegan version of this iconic shoe.

Final Thought: Which One Should You Purchase?

That’s a tough question to answer, but as far as I’ve seen, both shoes offer you nice value for money in their own respective ways.

If you’re looking for a comfortable and stylish shoe that you could take almost anywhere, like to college, work or maybe to any occasion, then the regular Old Skool might be the best option for you.

If you’re seeking a playful retro style experience, the Vans Knu Skool might be your go-to choice. These shoes not only provide a better impact absorbency but also feature thicker materials, offering a puffy and plushy feel. What’s more, they come at an affordable price point.

So the decision is all yours, take whatever suits you.
